Drift Sleepwear Blog - How to do Valentine's Day differently this year

The most romantic day (and night) of the year is just around the corner.

Valentine's Day, on February the 14th, is typically thought of as a special day of love and a celebration of romance. Apart from exchanging gifts, it's also seen as the perfect day to nourish, appreciate and celebrate all the important relationships in your life.

But what if you don't have a significant other?

Or maybe you're not a sucker for romance?

Maybe you want to do stand in protest against a traditional Valentine's Day celebration and do something different this year?

No problem... We hear you!

There are plenty of ways to enjoy Valentine's Day. In this blog post, we will discuss and share some fun and unique ideas for Valentine's Day. You'll even find some great date ideas that won't cost a fortune!

Reach out to that friend or family member you haven’t talked to in a while.

Valentines Day is not only for couples and lovers. It’s also the perfect day and a great excuse to reach out to those friends you haven’t seen since you graduated university. Or, that family member or person who you only see once or twice a year.

Make Valentine's Day into a friendship day by making Valentine's Day cards for all your friends, family and loved ones. Valentine's Day is not just about romantic love, but also an opportunity to celebrate all the important relationships in our lives.

In South Korea, April 14th (not February) is known as "Black Day" because it's a day for singles to eat black food (jajangmyeon noodles), drink black drinks and dress in black.

So if you're a single person, why not celebrate Valentine's Day, the way Black Day is celebrated by making yourself a romantic dinner, South Korean style!

Do What YOU Love to do, And What Makes YOU Happy!

Maybe your biggest passion and love in life at the moment is knitting, cycling, organising or watching cat videos all night? Do it! Valentine’s Day is the perfect day for you to do the things that actually make you happy.  Not the things you think you should do, or what other couples do.

Or maybe you love cooking? Then why not spend Valentine's Day doing some evening online classes? Maybe a cooking class or a virtual mixology class.

There are plenty of opportunities when it comes to celebrating Valentine's Day. The most important thing is to do what makes you happy.

Whether that means spending time with your loved ones, doing something special for yourself or simply relaxing and enjoying the day, Valentine's Day is a day to be enjoyed by all!

You don’t need a partner to have a smashing Valentine Day. Be your own Valentine date!

Even if you are single or if you can’t celebrate Valentine's Day with your partner, you can still have a fun day and romantic night!

Buy a bouquet of Valentine's Day roses for yourself! Go for a long walk in the park, take yourself out for a romantic dinner to one of your favourite local restaurants, or order a take-away. No need to beat yourself up. There's no rules here.

If you're chilling at home, throw on some comfy sleepwear, bring the duvet to the sofa and watch your favourite film for the 100th time. Need a new pair of super comfy Mens Pyjamas? We've got you covered!

Don't forget - there are plenty of ways to make this Valentine's Day special without having to rely on someone else. So be your own Valentine and enjoy the day however you please!

Valentine's Day on a Budget

Valentine’s Day isn’t about spending money, because just like The Beatles sang "Money can't buy me love".

Buying gifts is hard as it is already. Instead, spice up the things you do on a daily basis. Have breakfast in bed, treat yourself to a day without chores or treat your other half to a home-spa-day with a charcuterie board and bottle of wine!

If you're looking for some free (or low cost) Valentine's Day gifts, why not consider these ideas:

  • Make a romantic and fun homemade gift. Maybe print some photos of the two of you and things you've done together and put it into an album.
  • Make your own Valentine's Day card or write a love letter to that special someone in your life. By the way. If you are not feeling artistic, there's plenty of free Valentine's Day cards to print online!
  • Cook and serve a surprise home-made romantic dinner in the evening for your loved one(s).
  • No need to spend money on expensive holidays. Why not visit an attraction or go on a hike in your local area. Discovering places in your local area you have never seen or been to before is the perfect date idea!
  • Psst. Even though we're trying to avoid the classics... if you're out of ideas then flowers, a box of chocolate and a nice bottle of wine can never go wrong!

Your Pet is Your Valentine All Year Around !

Is your cat your best friend? Or is your dog that special someone in your life? There's certainly no judgement here. Spoil them like you would anyone else!

Pets make the perfect Valentine's Day date! They are always there for you, they love you unconditionally and they never complain about your terrible cooking or that you didn't get them any flowers.

So why not celebrate the day with your furry friend (or borrow one if you can)! Spend the day playing together, going for a long walk in nature, get them some special treats, a new toy or simply cuddling on the sofa. They'll love it and you get to spend Valentine's Day with someone special.

The Saint of Lovers and Romantic Love

Valentine's Day (14th February) originated as a Christian feast day honouring Saint Valentine, a Christian martyr and the patron saints of lovers, epileptics, and beekeepers.

Valentine was a Roman priest who was martyred on Feb. 14th, 269 A.D. He performed secret marriages for soldiers and young lovers who were forbidden to marry and because of this, he was put in harsh roman prisons and then later killed.

Valentine's day traditions have become a significant cultural, religious, and commercial celebration of romance, fun and love in many regions of the world.

The first heart-shaped box of chocolates was introduced in 1861.

It was created by Richard Cadbury, the son of John Cadbury, the founder of Cadbury. Richard Cadbury's idea was to start packaging chocolates in fancy boxes to increase sales. He introduced the first heart shaped treats, a box of chocolates for Valentines Day in 1861.

Today, more than 36 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolates are sold each year. That's is over 36 million kilograms of chocolate!
